धृतराष्ट्र की कितनी संतानें थी ? यही प्रश्न जन्मेजय ने वैशम्पायन जी से किया: कि गांधारी के कितने पुत्र हुए और उनकी उत्पति कैसे हुई तो वैशम्पायन जी कहते हैं की एक बार वेद व्यास हस्तिनापुर आए और गांधारी की आव भक्ति से काफी प्रसन्न हुए और उसे शत पुत्रवती भव् का आशीर्वाद दिया। अर्थात तुम्हारे 100 पुत्र हों ।
समयानुसार, गांधारी ने धृतराष्ट्र से गर्भ धारण किया। 2 वर्ष बीत गए लेकिन प्रसव नहीं हुआ । तब भी गांधारी उस गर्भ को धारण किये रही । इसी बीच, एक दिन, गांधारी को ये समाचार मिला की कुंती के गर्भ से प्रातःकालीन सूर्य के समान एक तेजस्वी पुत्र हुआ है। गांधारी का गुस्सा सातवें आसमान पर था और आवेश मैं आकर उसने अपने पेट पर प्रहार करना शुरू कर दिया जिसके फलस्वरूप उसको प्रव पीड़ा होने लगी और एक मॉस का पिंड उसके गर्भ से बाहर आया। गांधारी ने इस पिंड को फेकने का निश्चय कर लिया।
तुरंत वहाँ वेद व्यास जी आ गए और गांधारी को ऐसा करने से रोका।
